PYROTECH.COM - AND WHO HAS THE OTHER DOMAIN NAMES IN THE PYRO BIZ

In the
early part of 1995, I was on the phone with a tech support rep from
Northwest Nexus, my ISP (internet service provider) in Bellevue,
Washington. I had talked with "John" on many occasions before.
We were on a first name basis - he'd always recognize my voice when I
called in.
I can't remember why, but out of the blue I asked John how does one go
about getting a "domain name". Even though this conversation
took place just 5 years ago, the internet was still incomprehendable to
most. No easy-to-use register.com site. What the hec was InterNIC?
John said that Northwest Nexus could do the paperwork and send it off. He
asked if I had a name in mind. Well, ok.. I had been in pyro just a short
time and so I thought (quickly while on the phone) "pyrotech"
would be cool to use. I didn't have a fireworks company then to hang it
on, but using a custom domain name for my email address would be at least
better than something@aol.com.
John took some other personal statistics and said they'd probably get word
back in 30-45 days. At that time the InterNIC was handling domain
applications. Did a real committee have to convene and vote or something?
I guess it was about a month later when I received some paperwork in the
mail from Northwest Nexus. Sure enough, pyrotech.com was available and had
been assigned to, yep, Kenneth E. Julian, and I was off and running with
this internet thing. I think I even toasted the occasion. I had a piece of
the online pie.
I couldn't wait to send someone, anyone, an email from: kjulian@pyrotech.com.
Looking back, why didn't I tell John to register business.com? Someone
with entirely too much money laying around just paid $7.5 million for that
8-letter word. Anyway.
My only brush with selling the name came from a paint manufacturer. The
guy said he made fire-resistant paint (huh?) and claimed he should have
the name. I asked him to make at least a five-figure offer and only then
would I consider a "sell-off". Never heard from him again.
So much for the how-I-got-pyrotech.com story.
It's Year 2000 now and pyrotech.com has a perfect home. Entertainment
Firework's "pyrotechnet" website has been up and running 2 years
now. The site has gone through many changes, and will continue doing so.
Pyrotech.com is hosted in Los Angeles and now has surpassed 10,000 hits a
month. Not bad for a very vertical industry website.
Up until now, I haven't paid that much attention to what the rest of the
pyro industry was doing with domain names. Sure, Pyro-Spectaculars,
Zambelli, Grucci, etc. all have their own. But what about some of the
obvious generic names we toss around?
To find out, I spent several hours on the computer and found the answers.
Some surprising. Some not. Cakes.com (used in the pyro industry to
describe a multiple-shot ground effect) sure enough belongs to someone in
the baking industry, while Rockets.com, cleverly, belongs to the National
Basketball Association.
The following list is what I came up with. Now - listen closely. IF YOU
ARE USING INTERNET EXPLORER version 5.0 or higher, just click (you
wouldn't see the little link finger pointing up) on any domain name in the
list, and magically, a complete record of who that name is registered to
and other vitals will appear. To collapse the information, click on the
name again.
IF YOU ARE NOT USING INTERNET EXPLORER version 5.0 or higher, do not click
on anything! You will see the complete list.
By the way, I checked, and "shootemupintheair.com" is available
(shot em up in the air). Go for it!
